  • The elvish nation of Trelore.

    Abstract

The Realm of Trelore is through all practicality a loose confederation of three elven states: the Kingdom of Quel'anthas, ruled by the elegant Quel'anthasan Elves; the Union of Sylvynar, land of the tribal Sylvyn Elves; and, the Juive'len Conclave, home of the winged Elves. Occupying the east of the continent by the same name, derived from the Ancient Word of Power meaning “Sacred Land,” Trelore was a political union wrought by urgency rather than by choice, as a defense against a common foe, the Kingdom of K'Terak. When the sacred city of Carmelyana was destroyed by the Dark Elves, Quel'anthas convened a High Council of Elven Nations, whereupon the Alliance of Trelore was forged with the principal participation of the Quel'anthasan Elves and the Sylvyn Elves, and with reluctant and passing acknowledgment on the part of the Juive'len Elves. Contact between the member-states remains amicable, but no longer as frequent, as each side tends to keep to its own affairs, opting only to travel to Quel'anthas' High Court in times of dire stress or common peril.

    History

Long ago when the world was new, the Three-Faced Ioannes created Ancient Aelyrians from the magical Sands of Life. Archon Phedos, whose task it was to guard the gods' magics, enlisted the greatest of these creations, a young Aelyrian who would later be known as Diana, to steal a single grain from the Sands of Life. From this grain, Archon Phedos created the Ke'trala, the First Elves, later to be known as the Mother People of all elves. He intended them to be his personal helpers, blessing them with magical ability and affinity towards nature. They lived there in Aetheria with their master, serving him wholly, even as other gods rushed to create their own Peoples. The Ke'trala engaged in long battles in the name of Phedos until several bands of elves were marooned on the mortal plane, on lands seperated from the Ancient Aelyrians' own land by a vast body of water.

    Population

Because no census has been conducted within the borders of Trelore, it is uncertain how many people dwell within that vast territory. Each constituent society of Trelore, though welcoming of diversity of ideas, nevertheless is not inclusive of other Peoples and their views. Non-elves, or elves of vastly different racial compositions, find themselves marginalized in Trelorean society.

    Government

Though the King of Quel'anthas is by right of cultural heritage viewed as the chief figure of leadership among most elven Peoples, the Realm of Trelore is officially governed as specified in the organic charter of the Alliance, wherein a High Council of leaders from Quel'anthas, Sylvynar, and the Juive'len is constituted to make common decisions regarding defense policy and mutual welfare on the basis of consensus. Beyond this, Trelore has no other political function, and each member state enjoys considerable autonomy, if not outright independence with regards to how it handles its own affairs. The Kingdom of Quel'anthas is ruled by an absolutist monarchy, the Union of Sylvynar is governed by an oligarchy of tribal leaders, and the Juive'len operate under a democratic council system.

    Relations

The Realm of Trelore came into being in order to defeat the Kingdom of K'Terak, an island-nation of xenophobic and hostile Dark Elves bent upon obliterating followers of the Goddess Carmelya, and consequently, the Quel'anthasan Elves, Sylvyn Elves, and Juive'len Elves. Though Srennius, the Planetar of Peace, intervened in the Battle of Tur and put an end to the terrestrial campaign, a prolonged low-level conflict has raged on the Bellenic Sea. There are standing friendship treaties and accords with the human Kingdom of Daltice to the north, and the gnomish Republic of Selin, though given the reclusive nature of most elves, little regular diplomatic contact with these nations is made outside of the perfunctory.

    Geography

Realm of Trelore occupies the eastern part of the Trelorean continent. The realm is bordered by the nations of Daltice and Selin to the west and northwest, the Sea of Sorrow to the south, the Bellenic Sea to the east, and the Sea of Diana at its northernmost part. The mainland part of Trelore is entirely forested and contains many astonishing natural wonders, which were created by Carmelya for the Ke'trala during their first eras as mortals. With these, she taught them the deep devotion to nature that elves still hold today. Among these are the forest of mists, a dreamlike area in the center of the nation that is fiercely protected by the Sylvyn and considered holy ground; the great falls at the western mountain border that are impossibly, spectacularly wide; and, of course, the mysterious Vilyatol island to the east of the mainland which floats upon the air, far up in the sky.

Mainland Trelore is divided into two nations: The Kingdom of Quel'anthas and the Union of Sylvynar. The first occupies the north and the second occupies the south. The two nations are roughly equal geographically, with Sylvynar being slightly larger. The cities and towns of Quel'anthas include the Eternal City of Quel'anthas, Talelena, Duinostar, and the ruins of the sacred city of Carmelyana. This is not to say that these elves have become like Humans and other city-dwelling Peoples' rather, as new mortals, the Ke'trala had built the Eternal City to flawlessly incorporate with the forest around it. The Sacred City was built in homage to their Goddess; it was a fantastic and awe-inspiring place that is now only seen in artwork, history, and nostalgic poetry and Song. Carmelyana had buildings that were entirely constructed of living vine with roofs of blooming flowers. The city did not only include nature, but was nature. It was the greatest achievement of the Ke'trala, and lost forever when the invading Vysstichi razed it to the ground. The last two towns were built much later and followed the Eternal City's lead in being extremely sensitive to the natural world.

The Union of Sylvynar is made up of the various tree-top villages of the Sylvyn elves. These villages are scattered throughout the southern and middle forests, though only a few are publically known. Many more dwelling-places may exist, but the locations are only known by Sylvyn elves. The most famous of these villages is Edainmemen, which literally translates as "the place of women." It is populated only by female Sylvyn (although they have been known to take in females of other Peoples) and is the training base for the Nelohtar.

The Juive'len Conclave is the official name for the mysterious nation that lays claim to the floating island of Vilyatol. Ships on the Bellenic Sea can actually sail under the island, which is quite a distance up in the air. The island's underside is host to a sweeping garden of exotic orchids and plant life whose roots not only burrow into the soil above them but also reach out delicate tendrils to the air below. Sturdy vine cages that are magically grown and operated are nestled in the lush plants of both the eastern and western sides of the island can be lowered to waiting ships, then raised up through passages in the island itself to the surface of Vilyatol. They are located only within the twin cities of the Juive'len and are the only ways non-flying beings can reach the island without the assistance of flying ships, levitation Magic, or being carried by a flying being. The Juive'len reside in the twin cities of Anoron to the east and Lome to the west. These cities are quite unlike any others in the world and non-flying creatures would have a difficult time navigating them.
