Valanthia L'Evienne

Fotolia_899114_S.jpg
PC Name:
Valanthia L'Evienne
(It's pronounced Val-un-THEE-uh, with the "th" unvoiced as in "Cathy")

Race:
Half human/half vysstichi
Age:
31 (making her about 18 or 19). She was born a decade or so before what you'd think her birthday ought to be, based on that, but she essentially missed that entire time due to an incident with the planetar Kalendryas.

Physical Description:

NOTE: As of the end of Winter, Era XXVI-XXVII, Valanthia's hair is dyed black.

Valanthia is about 5'2", quite short for one with her racial heritage. She is slim, but fit, with the physique of someone who has spent long hours in running and weapons training. Her skin is a medium gray -- not as dark as a full-blooded vysstichi, but certainly a color that marks her as not fully human. Her eyes are a light gray, possibly the clearest sign of her human heritage. She has very pale hair, the unmistakable symbol of her vysstichi blood. If it were not for the fact that most people find her racial heritage objectionable, she would be considered beautiful in an exotic way.

Val has one tattoo, a spiral on her lower back.

Personality:
Valanthia is introverted by nature, a trait that has been reinforced by her life experiences. She prefers to work independently as much as possible, and usually tries to observe before she acts. She is extremely polite, and has a natural deference to authority, though that faith in authority has been profoundly shaken. Fiercely intelligent, and possessed of a remarkable work ethic, Val excels in academic settings. The flip side of this is that she is prone to endless brooding. She lets very few people into her heart, and is difficult to really get to know, though she is extremely devoted to those who are able to get through her shell. Val rarely feels like she "belongs" anywhere or with anyone. The melancholy in her character is hard to miss, though her shyness and sadness are sometimes mistaken for arrogance or diffidence.

In most normal conversations, Val has a stammer, where she will repeat words or pause awkwardly in the middle of sentences. This goes away when she feels like she is in a "classroom" setting, or when her emotions are at a peak.

At her best, Val is disciplined and thoughtful, able to hold complex information in her head, learn new information quickly, and wield her intellect as a weapon; fiercely loyal, and capable of surprising leadership, based on her ability to make persuasive arguments and a remarkable level of personal bravery; especially tender with children, animals, and people who are "outsiders," or who are experiencing personal lows; and poetic, seeing connections between things that appear unrelated on the surface, and appreciating the beauty in all things.

At her worst, Val is sullen, moody, and impossibly withdrawn; self-pitying to the point of self-parody; prone to making wild leaps in conversation that can't be followed by someone not actually inside her mind; possessed of a ferocious temper and the ability to hold grudges forever; only capable of seeing the worst side of everything and everyone; and the owner of a truly terrifying martyr complex.

MBTI: INTP ("The Thinker")
Enneagram: 5w4 ("The Philosopher")
Useful TVTropes: Sugar-and-Ice Personality, Defrosting Ice Queen, Prone to Tears, Stutter Stop

Languages:
Val was raised bilingual in common and vysstichi. Her vysstichi accent marks her as having grown up in Herozzal; her accent in common is much less regional and harder to place.

Val also has a good knowledge of Ancient Aelyrian, gleaned from her studies. She reads much better than she speaks, given that most of her facility with the language has been gained through reading.

She knows a few words and phrases in Eunesian (from living in Ieffreon) and Charismean (from her time spent on Rosie Kyrillos's ship)

Titles/Positions:

Her Royal Highness, Princess Valanthia (No one has said that this title is definitively still hers, but no one has said that it isn't either, so she continues to claim it.)
Recipient, Star of Michelle (for "acts of selflessness beyond simple kindness" related to her work in Syl'rosia)
Professional songwriter (which is the current way that she's earning money)

Former Imperial Consul to the Sultanate of Arakmat
Former Imperial Research Assistant to the Regent
Former(?) Sanguine Assassin. (Whether she still holds this position is open to question, but she's not getting paid for it anymore.)

PC of the Year, 2021 Aelyrian Awards
The PC You Can Always Trust To Have Your Back (tie), 2021 Aelyrian Awards
Most Neurotic PC (tie), 2008 Aelyrian Awards

Religious Views:

Val does not have a deity that she worships; encounters with the divine have rarely ended in positive results for her. She is especially down on Haya (as a result of growing up in Herozzal), Jorel and Jalat (for interfering with the Sundering), and Kalendryas (who didn't answer her questions, and instead threw her out of the timeline for a decade, plus everything with the Sundering). The only divine being of any kind that Val thinks well of is Saint Bossa, who defeated the necromancer, and then was able to help Val save Gye'ron's life in the Camena Ruins.

Pre-RP History:

Valanthia is the oldest of two children by five minutes or so; she has a twin brother, Salai, with whom she is not particularly close. She spent all of her formative years in Herozzal. Her father, Rioughe L’Evienne, was a noted womanizer and never married her mother. He did, however, care for the family financially. Her mother, Ka'terra, had been a simple shop clerk before Valanthia was born; she has worked occasionally since then, but for the most part has been content to live on the money that Rioughe brought with him during his periodic visits.

She was a taciturn child, but was an almost disturbingly singleminded student, and regularly brought home the highest marks in her class. Val's home life was relatively peaceful despite her father's usual absence, but she has ambivalent feelings about both of her parents and little in common with her brother. Her scholarly bent was at odds with her mother's unchallenging love of simple pleasures, and though she appreciated her father's willingness to spend time with her when he was in town, she found they often had nothing to talk about.

Her half-human heritage made her something of a semi-pariah among her peers, and much of the culture of Herozzal left a rather negative impression on her, though she absorbed more of it than she would care to admit. As such, she left home as soon as it could be arranged, while she was still in the uneasy twilight of late adolescence. She had accumulated a fair amount of money from Rioughe's gifts to her over the eras. Late in the summer of Era XII PF, a real estate speculator drifted into town -- very much a rarity, given the closed nature of the city -- and Valanthia purchased from her the deed to a small home in Taralon, that being the farthest away place that Val could think of at the time. Very soon thereafter, she set out for her new abode.

N.B.: The placement of this next thread is extremely problematic. It was originally timestamped in Optia, Spring Era XV PF, but that can't possibly be true, because it's the thread where she disappears. Possibly, the fact that Kalendryas, Planetar of Time was involved resulted in this thread becoming unmoored from the timeline. Or at least, that's what I'm going with.

Real Estate:

~Vacation home in Ieffreon called Coral Shore (bought for 19,100 crowns)
The estate wasn't an overly large or ostentatious one for this part of Ieffreon, but it was still lavish enough to be impressive in its own way. The main building was a two-story home, surrounded by a relatively small but immaculately kept lawn and garden. It had a white exterior, with tile roofs, and an entrance comprised of two doors, the first one wrought iron, the second one oak. A wrought iron fence ran about the estate's perimeter; on the gate was a small sign that read simply: CORAL SHORE.

Behind the main house was a courtyard and a second building. The property ended at a private, sandy beach.

The interior was open and airy, light pink curtains over the many windows. The floors were marble, and polished to a dizzying brightness. The entrance led into a sitting room with two couches, a wing-backed chair, a piano, and a massive fireplace. There were two doors at the room's back, one of which led into the kitchen and dining area, and the other of which opened into the study and Val's exercise room. A spiral staircase took one to the second floor, which boasted six bedrooms and three washrooms.

~The key to a room in Har'oloth owned by Dimitri Wladisyaw. Val has no idea if the key still works, or even if this room still exists.

Other Reasonably Important Items:

~Her Virkyn, Umbrosus. He's not technically an "item," but a massive, white, sentient wolf-creature who used to be human. Their minds are in some respects welded together -- if she concentrates, and often even if she doesn't, Valanthia can hear, see, and feel anything that he does. She can also communicate with him without having to physically speak.
~A gold ring. Once upon a time, it would instantly transport her and Umbrosus back to Coldlight when she put it on or tapped it. Post-Kalendryas, it does nothing at all, as far as Val can tell.
~A set of crystal-studded leather under-armor
~A pair of armbands with runes on them that indicate Val is a Sanguine who knows arcana. They can only be removed by using a special command while she is in clara.
~An Imperial visa in her own name
~A fake visa showing the name Angel Talasma Haema
~A white crystal dagger, given to Val in the Camena Ruins by the spirit of Saint Bossa
~The Cornerstone, a magic block of crystal that will rebuild the Krevion if activated
~A Spear of Stone Turning
~An 8" glass rose, made by Iseult Fluersdotter, and given to Val by Gye'ron Val Oriden
~A pendant, presented to Gye'ron by Saint Bossa in Camena, and later given by Gye'ron to Val. Gye'ron also gave Val a new chain for it in Summer Era XXVI. It no longer has any special properties
~Star of Michelle medallion in a wood and glass case. Presented to Val for "acts of selflessness beyond simple kindness" related to her work in Syl'rosia
~A cameo broach in the likeness of her grandmother, Elizabeth L'Evienne
~A portable piano -- it weighs no more than 25 pounds or so, and can be easily disassembled and reassembled -- given to her by Saint Noel for Primeheims
~A basic hot pink t-shirt (level 2), which she received when playing Werewolves at the Crown Inn. As per Charybdis, "the letters on the front all had minds of their own, it seemed. The sayings changed based on circumstance and happenstance to no apparent rhyme or reason. Yet no matter what they formed themselves into saying, it was always snarky, and usually ended with something to the tune of, No Darians Allowed. (The saying on the t-shirt, though, will change based on whatever your PC is currently doing. It is always sarcastic and usually mocking. The actual wording will be up to moderator discretion in any future thread you use it in.)"
~An adorable long-eared hedgehog named Ealida
~A collection of Arakmatian sheet music

"Well, this one certainly isn’t going to set the world of society alight."
~Nell L'Evienne, One Big Happy Family

"I am sure that you are very decent. In fact already I like you, and I am sure that we could be friends. Even if you are quiet."
~Rinoa Tigerlilly, Rinoa Enters

"She certainly was making no effort to hide her busy and troubled mind! Much consuming her thoughts, perhaps?"
~Ankou, Le Petite Respite

"It was strange listening to her hesitance, never mind the weight of the situation. She surely hadn’t inherited the sort of take on the world confidence that Rioughe possessed and oft passed along-gods only knew how many times, even when that particular brand of confidence was ill-advised. He’d often thought she had though, and just hadn’t found it due to lack of proper circumstances; and so hadn’t tried it on for size yet."
~Milo L'Evienne, Private Offices of the Regent

"No measure of reassurance, no amount of finesse seemed to convince his younger sister of her own worth. Rioughe was in large part responsible for this view she had of herself, but Milo suspected he’d never convince her otherwise. She’d have to look inside for it."
~Milo L'Evienne, Private Offices of the Regent II

"You are beautiful. I hadn't expected that. And a fiery temper inside as well. Good. That makes things easier. I would have been sorely disappointed if you were otherwise. And studious as well. Good. You will need it."
~Niravia DeSarnoia (Gossamer), Sanguine Silk Over Black Crystal

"Look deeply into your eyes. See how much you've changed? Just in a day? Note the days.. you will never quite look this way again... nor the way you looked when you came. You will get stronger, wiser, more powerful. And even more beautiful, if such is possible"
~Niravia DeSarnoia (Gossamer), Sanguine Silk Over Black Crystal

"'And besides all that, you I think, are far fiercer than they know. Sometimes, when I sleep, I remember the past. I remember being other than a creature with furred hide and four legs. Even then, I admired your sharpness.' Umbrosus said the word 'sharpness' in such a way that Valanthia would have no idea if he meant fierceness or intellect. It was almost as if he used it for both."
~Umbrosus (Gossamer), Sanguine Silk Over Black Crystal

”I haven’t known Ms. L’Evienne that long, but I can tell you she’s honest and she cares deeply about the state of the Empire. She’s not a bad kisser, either. If she says she’s going to save the people of Candaceburg, you best believe that she will. Whatever roadblocks she faces in that process, she’ll work tirelessly around.”
~Rosie Kyrillos, And By What Way Shall I Go Back?

"She was noble, even if nobleness had not been her writ at birth. She was godly in virtue, even if she kept no Gods. Milo had chosen the wrong successor when he passed on his Princedom, but perhaps the people weren't ready to see what she was. She was the dream of Aelyria. She was the essence of why it existed as a meritocracy and not simply an old, stifling kingdom. Valanthia was everything that was worth fighting for. How could he not give his life and his efforts to a woman who could find it within herself to see that he was more than just his worst moments?"
~Gye'ron Val Oriden, A Voice from the Darkness

Music for Val

This is a playlist of songs that both represent Valanthia, and that I think she would enjoy.

Please don't make me cry.
I'm just like you, I know you know.
I'm just like you, so leave me alone.

Bolts from above hit the people down below.
People in this world, we have no place to go.
Oh, it's the last time...

Lately, I'm not the only one.
I say, never trust anyone.

The stars light a sky,
And a gutter full of broken dreams tonight,
Though I'm not content that's the way it seems to be...

A universe in mourning, I don't know how to quit.
It's gonna break my heart to see it blown to bits.

I'm gonna die in a place that don't know my name.
Yeah, I'm gonna lie in a space that don't hold my name.
God knows you lonely souls.

I caught a glimpse, now it haunts me.

But a part of me will never be free,
And the part that's free will never be me,
But a thing of love and beauty is in my head,
A message from our enemy...

Where do we have to be
So I can laugh and you'll be free?
I'd go anywhere.
Baby, I don't care.

Road's end getting nearer
We cover distance still not together
If I am the storm, if I am the wonder
Will I have flashlights, nightmares
And sudden explosions?
There's no room where I can go, and
You've got secrets, too.

Sadness is a blessing. Sadness is a pearl.
Sadness is my boyfriend, yeah, sadness, I'm your girl.

Be aware, my darling
These things I say I mean
Are just traces of something
I long to feel again
I see our time expand
In the air almost forcibly,
Spreading thinner till it dissolves completely.

Just give me one more day, give me another night.
I need a second chance, this time I'll get it right.

If I was crying in the van with my friend,
It was for freedom from myself and from the land.
I made a lot of mistakes. I made a lot of mistakes.
I made a lot of mistakes. I made a lot of mistakes.

Every day I take a bitter pill, it gets me on my way
For the little aches and pains, the ones I have from day to day
To help me think a little less about the things I miss
To help me not to wonder how I ended up like this.

All the unknown dying or dead
Keep showing up in my dreams
And they stand at the end of my bed
Have I ever really helped anybody but myself...?

Back to the crib, back to the castle
The bottle's empty and the bed's unmade
You had the looks, you had the lover,
You're being brave, but we know that you're afraid.
Put your hands up if you ever feel afraid.

As the North Sea screams
You'll cross the boundary
And it feels like nothing feels like
And the cure for death is
Wild and breathless
When you lost more than you'll ever know
Don't die away

I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die.

Well, here it is then -- loneliness.
