Into the (Els)Dragon's Lair (Keldon)

Timestamp
Spring, Era XXVI P.F.
Location
Dragon's Cliff, Republic of North Umbria
He had to give the guard credit. The young man had stopped his advance cold. But, that was alright. He hadn't expected it to be easy. And, he wasn't nearly as skilled a swordsman as he would have liked to be. Still, it wasn't the first time he'd fought, and he wasn't ready to concede yet.

As Caeso began to advance, he willingly gave up a few steps, studying his opponent, looking for any openings as he parried the guardsman's strikes. And, he found one.

As Caeso's sword swung toward him, he raised his own blade to parry and deflect as he pivoted to his opponent's left side. Sliding his right foot to hook Caeso's left, he tried to capitalize on the lost footing by driving his shoulder into the guard's side, trying to topple him, or at least unbalance him further.

Caeso swayed slightly as he lost his footing the way Ren intended. Though Ren did not quite manage to make contact with him, the movement forward as Caeso at Keldon perhaps seeking his approval gave Ren just that little moments window to turn the tide in his favor.

As Caeso stumbled backwards, he brought his sword upwards from a lower guard. His goal, catch Rens steel and disarm him. The moment the two blades struck, it would all set the stage if Ren managed to disarm Caeso or be the one who became disarmed himself.

As the moment of the blades disconnection from the solider who lost, another few guardsmen would approach from down the roadway. Your excellency, it appears some raiders from the disbanded legions pillaged a hamlet just a ways outside the castle-city. We dispatched some guardsmen to assist, but it appears they were killed. Their bodies were found a candlemark ago… we have started to assemble riders.” the solider remarked and left as Keldon nodded towards him.
The elf-lord took a deep breath and sighed, looking towards the other guardsmen present. ”It appears those which are lost require some attention… be mounted in twenty…” the lords voice was crisp and sharp, little room for interpretation. Looking towards Ren he smiled. ”If you’d like to join us, you are welcome to. Imperial Soldiers who have gone rouge will provide no quarter, they understand the penalty if they are caught alive.”

Just as he thought that Caeso was about to go down, the guardsman found his footing, at least enough to launch a counterattack at his weapon. He was caught by surprise by the move, and though he tried to counter, it was too late.

There was a brief moment of tension as the two blades pushed against one another and he tried to adjust his grip and weight, followed by the tinging of steel on stone as his sword was pried from his grip.

He stepped back, hand instinctively moving to the dagger he kept sheathed at the back of his belt, ready to continue, albeit at a disadvantage.

He paused as another guard appeared with what he knew to be dire news. He stood there, more relaxed as he listened. When Keldon gave his order and turned to him with an offer, a multitude of thoughts and emotions washed over him.

He'd faced rogue legionnaires before, and that had not gone well at all. As Keldon said, they provided no quarter, and that he and a pitifully few others managed to escape the battle alive, it had broken the company. His part in that was likely not small.

Still, this time he would be with properly trained soldiers, led by an experienced leader. Perhaps things would be different. Either way, it would be nice to get out and do something other than cut and tool leather. He enjoyed leathercraft, but, it could be tedious work, and he didn't always do well with tedious.

"I'll come if you can provide a mount."

Keldon nodded in agreement. "Of course, we'll make sure you have a mount. We'll be departing in twenty minutes, so gather your things and meet us at the lower courtyard."

When Ren arrived found the courtyard of the fortified castle city was a grand and impressive sight. It was a large open space surrounded by towering walls of reinforced limestone. The walls were adorned with intricate carvings and heraldry of House Elsdragon. The limestone was a pale gray color that seemed to have a smooth and slightly glossy finish. The walls were punctuated by tall, narrow windows that let in streams of light, making the space feel open and airy. The reinforced limestone walls were thicker and more robust, made to withstand any kind of attack.

In the center of the courtyard stood a raised stone platform, which served as a gathering place for the guards. The platform was constructed of the same pale gray reinforced limestone as the walls and was surrounded by a low stone balustrade. The platform was large enough to accommodate all forty guards, if not more and it was where Keldon would give orders and lead them into battle.

The courtyard was meticulously tended, with lush green lawns and colorful gardens that were filled with a variety of flowers and shrubs. The gardens were tended by a team of gardeners who were responsible for keeping the space beautiful and well-maintained. A cobblestone pathway wound its way through the gardens, leading to the platform, which was the focal point of the courtyard.

The guardsmen assembled at the courtyard, standing at attention on the platform, their armor and weapons gleaming in the sunlight. They were a formidable sight, and the people of the castle-city looked upon them with respect and admiration. As Ren approached he saw that the guardsmen were already mounted and ready to depart. Approximately forty guards accompanying Ren and Keldon were a mix of seasoned veterans and newer recruits. The veterans were men and women who had served in the guards for several years and had seen their fair share of battles. They were skilled fighters, and they moved with a sense of confidence and purpose. They were armed with swords and shields, and they wore armor that was well-worn but well-maintained.

The newer recruits, on the other hand, were still learning the ropes. They were eager and determined, but they also had a sense of nervousness and uncertainty. They were armed with swords and shields as well, but they wore armor that was newer and shinier than that of the veterans. They were still learning how to move and fight in formation, but they were eager to prove themselves.

All of the guards were mounted on strong horses that were well-trained for battle. They were all dressed in the same colors, which were the colors of House Elsdragon, and several carried a standard bearing the crest of House Elsdragon. At first sight they appeared to be a formidable force, giving a sense of they determination to protect the people and bring the rogue legionnaires to justice.

Keldon approached him and handed him the reins of a large black stallion. "This is Shadow. He's a strong and reliable horse, and I think you'll find him to be a good match for you."
