Valanthia L'Evienne
I can't go on. I'll go on.
Val stood and greeted Iasonas with enthusiasm. It was good to know that, to all appearances at least, the man was genuinely happy that she'd accepted his invitation. She gave sort of a mental nod to Umbrosus; the creature could take care of himself, and hopefully would find something to eat before long.
Eventually, she moved over to the harpsichord. "I hope you will...will forgive my technique," she said gently as she sat down. "It's...it's a different animal, the harpsichord, and I've only been...been practicing on a piano. But I'll do...do my best."
The music was in front of her, but Val would rather take her first pass at the unfamiliar instrument using a song she already knew. Invention in D Minor was one she had memorized, and which she decided to try to begin with. It was a piece featuring a melody that wove in and out, appearing first in the treble, then in the bass, now in counterpoint between them. Normally, Val took it essentially at terminal velocity, but she backed off the tempo this time to something more moderate.
The touch of the instrument was different enough that Val's normal brutal accuracy wavered somewhat as she played. And, since one couldn't play with any dynamics on a harpsichord (unless one had a second manual or some way to change stops), she wasn't able to add that element to her playing. However, she would be able to make it through the song reasonably well, at which point she would see if Iasonas wanted to play himself, had something else for Val to play, or just wanted to talk.
